Doxie Rx: I want to let you know some important information about anal sacs (yuk!). Anal sacs are small pockets under the skin that hold fluid that releases when pooping. Sometimes the fluid doesn't release and gets infected and must be drained by a vet. This is a common problem with dachshunds. My vet told my humans that the best way to prevent this is to NOT feed me premium dog food alone. That food creates smaller stools not allowing pressure for the anal sacs to release the fluid. I have not had any anal sac problems since I stopped eating premium foods. So beware of labels that state "smaller stools" or "less waste." Also you can mix the premium food with a medium grade food to help prevent this. Sincerely, Hope |
